I've been adding more detail to the environment, the player's track up to the shore is all finished, and I'll start adding in the trees and grasses in soon. Then I just need to sort out the sun and sky and I'm pretty much done as far as the first area goes.
Here's some of the vegetation I'll be including in the initial environment. Each of which were common in south-western turkey around 300BCE, if they no longer are now. Each will be animated to bend lightly in the breeze as the game opens, but will become still as the sun sets and the player fades into view, representing his transition into death.

I couldn't resist doing a little more animation, despite it being of slightly lower priority, so I've also made a harpy (one of many creatures that'll inhabit the underworld other than the souls of other dead people) and have started animating it.
